The characters in the book stay with you so long after you're done reading

This is a story of love, loss, forgiveness, friendship and strong women. We watch as CeeCee comes to grips with her past and finally allows people in on what she has been through with her mother.
I loved this book Beth Hoffman brings these characters to life you end up loving them all.

Our club all enjoyed it!

We really liked this book, the back and forth in the story was well done as Henry & Keiko’s story unfolded. I also think Henry going back into his memories taught him a lot about himself just as it taught his son more about Henry.

This was a sweet story; a coming of age story and the relationship between fathers and sons, but with this historic backdrop of a time in US history that I think a lot of people do not like to talk about or just plain don’t know about. I also enjoyed the story of Henry and Sheldon’s friendship that was founded over jazz music and loved that they were still friends in 1986.

This isn’t an action packed story this is a character driven story and I thought all the characters were well written and a very diverse cast of characters that made this an even more interesting read.

I enjoyed this story and as the title infers it is kind of a bittersweet story but one I recommend. This is Jamie Ford’s first novel and I think he deserves kudos for doing so well and I would definitely read more from this author.

Great Discussion

This is a great book for discussing siblings, birth order, parenting and what it means to be a grown-up. It also has some of the best quotes in it this being our favorite-
“What I mean is, I still feel like me. It’s not like I wake up and think, I am a responsible adult. I just look in the mirror and see myself. The same stupid person I’ve been looking at for years.”

Powerful

This book may not have been liked by all of our members but it was a great discussion!

This is a very powerful book about immigrants and the conditions they had to live in when they came to our country and how people took such advantage of them. I think the hardest part of this book was not the gory details of the meat packing plant but the tragedy after tragedy. The hardships these people went through is so heartbreaking, between the elements, weather, health and the way people take advantage of them just compounded on top of each other and these poor people never got a break.

The meat packing part of this story is so disgusting; the food handling in and out of the packing plant is abhorrent. I was shocked not only at the meat packing but at the food they would buy from the stores in the neighborhood the chemicals they put in the food and the way they watered everything down was so awful. And our poor soldiers eating this disgusting canned meat how they got away with it, I am so glad we have better regulations now!

The way this book is written is so different because of the topic I expected something different what I got was a lyrical tale of horrors not only in industry but in life too. Oh my goodness the life Jurgis lived was so sad and I guess I have found out that I am a Happily Ever After girl after all.

The end of this book turns into a huge political ad for the socialist party so by then I just wanted it to be over!

This is an important book about a historic time in our country it is not for the faint of heart. But is a great book club book because of the interesting converstaion to be had!

Good for a look into small town living

Since we are in North Dakota and this book is about North Dakota it resonated with our bookclub there are times when the author is very pessimistic but over all was an interesting book.

Hard read but well written

This was an interesting look at the abhorrent conditions that some nursing homes were in and the people working in them were sadists and thieves who prey on the weak. It was tough reading at times especially if you have a loved one in a care facility but you couldn’t help but cheer for the residents and hope their big plan would work.

Something light for a little change

Oh we’ve come a long way baby!
Some of the sexist things that came out of Emerson’s mouth:
A woman with an inquiring mind is there such a thing!
Think, Peabody; if you have ever used your brain now is the time.”
“Speak, then. That is the trouble with women, even the best of them.” Emerson added. “They will indulge in vain cries of ‘if only’ and ‘had I known.’

Even though Emerson is at times an arrogant prig I couldn’t help giggling at some of the things he said and Amelia’s reaction to them. Also some of the times she really got him good like when his pocket was smoking that cracked me up. I enjoyed this cute cozy Amelia Peabody is so much fun and the ending cracked me up!
Our bookclub read this because we wanted something a little lighter this month and this one fit the bill perfectly, our discussion was mostly on just how far women have come, and that showed in the mystery too I don’t think that exact same story could have been set in current times. Plus you get archaeology and Egyptology; mummy’s and murders this along with Amelia wit, Emerson’s gruffness makes the perfect combination for this fun cozy. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

Fun Book

Our club all enjoyed this book although some thought the story was sappier than others but overall everyone really enjoyed this story. We had a great discussion about some of the metaphors presented in the story and discussed our favorite Christmas stories.
This is a book about friendships and healing and what makes a family. Highly recommend.

Unique and a great discussion

Our library bookclub was chosen to receive advance copies of this book from the publisher but we didn’t expect a 500+ page book so that was off-putting right away for some but once I got past the first 100 pages it was a fast read, some didn’t make it that far and gave up, some finished and liked it almost as much as I did and others finished and only found it a 3 or less star read. Our average Star Rating for this book was 3.5 so still pretty good. Our Library bookclub would like to thank the publisher Little Brown for choosing us to receive an advanced copy of this book. The review below is from our Librarian.

This book started out slow for me the first 100 pages I was confused then all of a sudden I couldn't put this book down and I think it took me as long to read the last 400 pages as it did to read the first 100. There are times this book is confusing and I can see how people would give up on it but I am really glad I had to read this for bookclub so I didn’t give up after my usual 50-100 pages because that is when it gets good!
This book is one that I think will stay with you long after you read it, I am done now but still thinking of Ursula. I would recommend hanging in there if the first 100 pages are getting you down because once you get over that hump then it will really grab you! Kate Atkinson has written a fascinating, unique book that I think is deserving of all the buzz it is getting, just know this is very different than the Jackson Brodie series.

Sad but beautiful

You will love these sisters, so close yet so different Twiss has a smart mouth and always seems to speak her mind and Milly is demure and shy and always puts everyone’s needs above her own no matter the cost to herself. Then there is their parents the mother who dreams of Paris and wanting more than her lot in life has given her, and the father who is a golf pro until “the accident” and can’t play golf anymore and moves to the barn. Then there is cousin Bette who comes for the summer, the summer that changes everything.

Some had problems with the bad language

This book was just ok, not a bad story but could be confusing at times. Some of our members couldn't get past the bad language as the main character in this book has tourette's. There were some laugh out loud moments when he was trying to get out a phrase and it came out this rhyming mess of made up words, but then you felt kind of bad you laughed. I think it may have been an insightful look into what it is like to have tourettes but as I’ve never met anyone with the disease I can’t be sure.

Great discussion!

Everyone really liked this book and what a great discussion! There is an amazing moral and ethical dilemma told in a way that keeps you reading to find out what peoples choices will be. The back and forth between past and present was well done and it was really interesting to see life in a concentration camp from both sides. Highly recommend this one for book clubs!

Many didn\'t finish this book because it read like a textbook so our bookclub didn\\\'t enjoy it much.
Some liked the book but also found it very dry at times.

I do recommend this because of the good discussion even though all of us were just kind of meh on the book.

Not a favorite

We were kind of split on this book it is an odd book and hard to explain . However we had a very lively conversation so it is hard to rate it because although only one person liked the book we had a very in-depth conversation about it so it did make a good bookclub book.
