My Reviews
This is a popular discussion book, thus my recommendation for book clubs. A bit of a mystery, a bit of a medical book, a bit of sci-fi, a bit of a love story...but not well done in any of those genres. Never the less many find it worth reading.
Brooks takes on a subject that I knew nothing about and makes it interesting. She usually enthralls me more than this book did. But I do believe it is a good discussion book.
A gentle read. I can imagine something like this almost happening. A good behind the scenes look at institutions. Well written, although one needs to suspend belief in areas. I liked the characters and the prose.
delightful...absorbing character study, extremely well written...
if you are looking for a book about the Iraqi war -look elsewhere the theme of this book is universal and wonderfully crafted. I believe it will be used in schools to teach prose, alongside classics.
a good book, but not quite as heart wrenching as the plot could have been
A well written, arresting mystical folklore tale. Highly recommend it to people new to such a genre. Possibly not as wonderful to those who read may similar books.
A well written novel covering difficult subjects. The author set the atmosphere of marital relations in the 60's well and did a good job with the social work issues. A very discussable book club book.
Not quite as interesting or dramatic as some others by the same author, but worth the read.
an unemotional look at a slice of society, an elegy to the loss of hope, but not dreary
