My Reviews

The Emperor's Children by Claire Messud

Could spark some conversation, but...

I didn't like it at all. The author's writing style is unusual. She's likes using stream-of-consciousness asides in the middle of her narrative that I find annoying and cumbersome. She uses excruciating detail, and while she succeeds in painting a very precise picture, it isn't a terribly interesting one. The characters are well developed, but boring and they behave in stereotypical ways. If my book club read this, we'd have a fun discussion of character assassination, but I doubt that it would make a lasting impression on any of us. We have a policy that someone in the club has to have read the book being recommended, which is why I was reading this. However, I won't be recommending it to my club.

Interesting, Insightful, Informative
Great discussion topics

While this book was not one of my favorite books, it definitely gave our group some interesting and provocative topics for discussion. Despite the fact that none of us really liked the book, we were all able to finish it and agreed that the ideas and discussions will linger with us for many months to come.

Unconvincing, Slow, Pointless
A Zany, Entertaining Tale

It took me a while to decide if I liked this book, but it has stayed with me. The characters are very well developed and engaging. And while I didn't immediately like or dislike any of them, I enjoyed their company. There are plenty of events and characteristics to discuss, and we had a fun and lively conversation about this book.
