Introduction

A Powerful Novelization from Bestselling Author Angela Hunt

Epic in scope, yet deeply personal, this novelization offers a unique perspective on the story of the resurrection. Roman Tribune Clavius is assigned by Pilate to keep the radical followers of the recently executed Yeshua from stealing the body and inciting revolution. When the body goes missing despite his precautions, Clavius must hunt it down.

His investigation leads him from the halls of Herod Antipas to the Garden of Gethsemane and brings him in touch with believer and doubter alike. But as the body still remains missing, Clavius commits to a quest for the truth--and answers that will not only shake his life but echo throughout all of history.

Discussion Questions

Were there any details about Rachel’s preparation for the Passover celebration that you hadn’t known before? What practices stood out most to you, and why?

When Rachel speaks of Adonai to Clavius, he says, “Sounds rather stern. Our gods are a livelier lot.” From the descriptions in the book or your own knowledge, what are some other differences between the Jewish and Roman religious practices?

Clavius interrogated many different followers of Jesus, as well as those more skeptical of Jesus’ claims. What parts of these interviews stood out to you?

We only see the investigation of Yeshua’s body from Clavius’ point of view. Based on his later actions, what explanation do you think Lucius settled on for what had happened to the body? What makes you think that?

How did Clavius approach death differently when hearing about the loss of his sister, as opposed to the many graves he had uncovered the past several days? What questions do you find that people begin to ask when someone close to them dies?

In chapter 30, Clavius decided to follow the person who claimed to be Jesus to Galilee, a choice he knew would have serious consequences. Have you ever had to make a decision you knew others would disagree with? What did you do, and how did those people react?

Throughout the story, Clavius entertains different explanations for the apparent resurrection of Yeshua: the body was stolen, Yeshua didn’t really die on the cross, he was a magician, his followers were hallucinating or crazy. Have people you know put forth any of these explanations? How do you respond to them?

Peter, John, and the other disciples were portrayed as ordinary, flawed human beings in this novel, with actual personality traits. Which secondary character in the book was your favorite and why?

If you were to write an epilogue to this story explaining what happened to Clavius after the close of the novel, what would it include?

As you read the novel, were there any differences between what you would have expected from reading the Biblical account of the resurrection in the Gospels? What added historical context did you most enjoy? Were there any details you wish hadn’t been added?

Did you see the movie version of the novelization? If so, compare and contrast the two. What differences surprised you? What did you enjoy about each?
