Reviews: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

A family slowly falls apart amid secrets and lies.
I enjoyed the book. The story begins in the sixties and continues into present day. It was interesting to see the changes in attitudes towards disabled children and the role of women. Lot of interesting conversation can occur on the themes in this book.

The Other Boleyn Girl

Historical fiction at it's best. Imagine life in Henry the VIII's court.
I loved this book. So interesting. You won't believe the role of women in the political arena at this time.

Moloka'i

One girls struggle and triumph with leprosy.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were beautifuly described and the setting was amazing.

Bel Canto (P.S.)

A group of people are held hostage in an unnamed third world country. They develop unusual relationships due to their circumstances.
This book was highly rated and received critical acclaim. I found the story to be unique, however it was not necessarliy engaging to me. The story is character driven, but the plot was weak epectially the ending. Not one of my groups favorites.

The Black Book

A man's wife leaves him. He searches for her by reading her brother/his cousin's writing.
I cannot put into words how much I hate this book. I was determined to get through it, and tried to attribute the writing to cultural or translation differences. The author discussed the missing wife minimally even though that was what the blurb on the back stated as the main point of the story. The main character was pathetic and had very odd relationships with both his wife and cousin. The majority of the text was Turkish history, storytelling, and mysticism that did not make sense to the average readaer or most likely to anyone not currently obtaining an Ivy League education.

The Grass Is Singing

A look at the relationship between black and white Africans during the early 1900's
I found this book to be shocking because of the way white Africans viewed and spoke of black natives. The story was a bit depressing due to the squalid living conditions of the main characters and their slow descent into maddness. I thought there would be more of a romance due to descriptions I have read, but I did not see one at all. It does however, have much you can discuss.

The Grass Is Singing

Billed as a love story, but really a story of how a misguided girl ruins the lives of two innocent people.
Although this is supposed to be a love story I felt it was more a tale of betrayal. The prose was beautiful and very rich in detail. The story was engaging and I enjoyed it. However, the more I thought about the book after I finished it, the angrier I became at the main charcter and the ending of the novel. Many interesting discussions are possible from this story.

Mary

Mary Lincoln is a women ahead of her time. She also suffers from RX drug use and the death of three children plus her husband.
This book was so interesting and engrossing. Mary lived a life of privilage until marrying Abe Lincoln. She faced troubles that would have been easily dealt with today.

Dress Your Family In Corduroy And Denim

Humorous account of the author's life.
I loved this book. I thought it was funny and also a nice quick read. However, there is not that much to discuss, so you might just want to read it on your own.

Mistress of the Art of Death

A female forensic anthropologist examines the death of children in medevil England.
Slow to get into, but becomes more engrossing. Not really historical fiction, but probably fairly close. Can provide good conversation, but not an overall group favorite.

Mrs. Dalloway

Clarissa Dalloway goes about her day getting ready for a party
For deep literary minds only. Overall slow and dull. Appears to hold interest for those willing to look into the deeper meaning of the text.

Digging to America: A Novel

Two families come together through their adopted daughters.
A good story about relationships. Not much about the kids, more about the older adults. Good book, not so much to talk about.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being: Twentieth Anniversary Edition

A womanizer in Czech during communism.
I enjyoed the book. The language was beautiful, and the characters were engaging. However, it is a deep read that either requires another read or an interpertation. Also, not so familiar with the history and feel that something may have been lost in translation.

Shantaram : A Novel

A novel based on the life of the author. Crime, passion, and exotic location.
A very entertaining read filled with crime and drama. Long, but engrossing.

My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands

Chelsea Handler's wild and not always sexy sex life.
Very funny, great for a good laugh and a fun discussion. A good pick after a serious read.

Loving Frank: A Novel

A novel based on Frank Loyd Wright's controversal love affair.
Beautifuly written and engrossing to read. Don't read about Frank's life before reading because it will ruin the suprising, true ending.

Lucia Lucia

Lucia is struggling between marriage and career in 1950's New York City.
A light enjoyable read.

The Post-Birthday World: A Novel (P.S.)

Irina goes back and forth between life with two different men.
Very different and interesting. A little slow at the beginning, but worth it.

American Wife: A Novel

Based loosely on Laura Bush. A nove about love and marriage.
Good read, a lot to discuss.

Happy Family: A Novel

A chinese immigrant woman's story of longing
A really enjoyable book, lots to discuss, liked by all members.

Breath, Eyes, Memory (Oprah's Book Club)

A girls childhood in Haiti and then New York seriously effects her life
Very enjoyable, easy read, tough subject area.

Liars and Saints: A Novel

Family drama over several generations
A lot to talk about. A family with some secrets and lots of drama.

Game of Kings: A Year Among the Oddballs and Geniuses Who Make Up America's Top HighSchool Chess Team

A year with the chess team from Murrow high school.
A very interesting book about the teens who make up the winning chess team at Murrow. More about the people than the game. Especialy interesting to a New Yorker familiar with the school.

Game of Kings: A Year Among the Oddballs and Geniuses Who Make Up America's Top HighSchool Chess Team

Dramatic, Gloomy, Dark

Interesting and Sade
Touching but sad story of women in Kabul.

Let the Great World Spin: A Novel

Beautiful, Boring, Slow

Let the great world spin
My book club loved it, but I didn't. It was a beautifully written story with some great lines. I didn't however feel for any of the characters and was not too interested with the story line.

The 19th Wife: A Novel

Interesting, Epic, Informative

The 19th Wife
I loved this book, it was so interesting. A real page turner.

Little Bee: A Novel

Beautiful, Dramatic, Dark

Little Bee
A beautifully written story about a refugee and a British family. Some parts were tough to read, but overall satisfying.
