A thought-provoking look at a little-known chapter in America's history and the unsung heroines whose suffering and determination had a profound impact on our institutions. Thanks to the "Shining Women," we now have protections from toxic substances and dangerous work environments.
Tragic story of the women who worked in factories painting luminous dials and watches, exposing them to deadly radium. The details of the court cases are, at times, tedious reading, but nonetheless enlightening. Science owes these women a tremendous debt.
No one in our group actually enjoyed reading this book, but we had a good discussion. It is hard for any of us to imagine an employer so stuck on profits that they could not let the girls working for them know that they were in danger. The book was a little tedious, but important to read.
you can read the summary for yourself. This is a non-fiction story of the girls in the early 1900's who thought they had a fun, good paying job. In the end , it cost most of them their lives. Similar story to Henrietta Lacks -- if you liked that , you would like this as well. I kept getting all the girls names confused, but that doesn't really matter. Its a sad story that they were not taken seriously. Good read.
Fascinating story about brave women who suffered and endured so much during their short lives.
This was a great book but tough to get into initially. Interesting documentary style writing. Fascinating look into a part of our country I never knew about.
Wow! This book is amazing,. The story is a nonfiction account of the young women who lost their lives due to industrial radium poisoning. Though it is nonfiction, it reads like a novel; a horrifying, heartbreaking novel!
I flew through the book and was hardly able to put it down. The story is a mix of medical drama, courtroom drama, and family drama. You really should read it for yourself. And then encourage your book club to read it, because you are going to want to talk about it!
I read an ARC from Bookreporter.com
I loved this book for so many reasons but most of all because it’s a story that must be heard. The injustice these women experienced is almost unthinkable. The courage and strength the women had to stand up for each other and themselves during great adversity is completely inspiring. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
This was an interesting read. However, it is boring and the story is stretched on and on. I know that the historic details are informative, but I skipped some of the repetitive information.
A surprising book in that I knew nothing about this terrible case that actually spawned the creation of modern occupational medicine. It’s an important story that is well told. You get to know the radium girls and you are moved by their struggle for justice.
Radium Girls made me so angry! While it is not the most well written book, it did tell the vivid story of ordinary people being harmed and disregarded by those who hold power over them. In the end, the women triumphed, but it was a small victory compared with the anguish endured by themselves and their loved ones.
