An old house, an old sketch book, an old murder, an old photograph, and a lot of mysteries. Who doesn’t love all of those???

THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER has it all. ??

THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER goes back and forth in time looking for clues to connect Elodie’s present-day questions and findings to the time when her mother was alive and how a country manor and other mysteries seem to have a connection to her mother. She KNOWS there is some connection with everything she finds circling around Birchwood Manor.??

Ms. Morton definitely makes you “work” for the clues. Her writing is beautiful as always, but the story line was difficult to follow.

Each chapter began without the identification of the person talking so the reader has to figure out who has appeared on the scene now. ??

I always enjoy Ms. Morton's books because of the gothic atmosphere and marvelous connection between the characters and the story line, but THE CLOCKMAKER'S DAUGHTER had me confused most of the time. Finding the connections was similar to solving a difficult math problem.??

Once the chapter got started and you became interested in the story line, it was over and another thought and character appeared.??

I can't say I didn't like the book. THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER had a skillfully constructed story line, but it wasn't an easy read.

Once you were connected, though, it all started to come together in her marvelous Kate Morton style with a brilliant ending.

I LOVE her books, her beautiful writing, and her involved story lines so I kept reading because I wanted to find out how it all fit together and what the ending would reveal. The revelations were marvelous as always.

Anyone who loves Kate Morton, who likes to unravel a book's story line, and who can wait until it all comes together will not want to miss reading THE CLOCKMAKER'S DAUGHTER. 4/5

Kate Morton wows readers with The Clockmaker's Daughter, a gothic gem of historical fiction. Morton cleverly frames her novel with a ghost's narration, taking readers back to the summer of 1862 when Edward Radcliffe, brilliant young artist, invites his fellow members of the Magenta Brotherhood to his bewitching house on the banks of the upper Thames, Birchwood. But a quiet summer does not a good story make, so the idyllic interlude shatters when one woman is shot dead, another goes missing, and a family heirloom jewel disappears, leaving Edward's life ruined.

Fast forward to the present when archivist Elodie Winslow discovers an old leather satchel containing a photograph of a beautiful woman and a sketchbook with a drawing of an oddly familiar house. Why does Elodie feel so drawn to the house in the sketch? Who is the woman in the photograph?

The story of Birchwood and, ultimately, the fateful summer of 1862 is intriguingly told by various narrators connected to the house through time. Morton explores the importance of place, the purposes of art and story, and the fluid nature of time, but mostly she tells a ripping good story that captures the imagination. Her fans will not be disappointed in her new novel, and she stands to gain many new readers with her tale of art, love, and loss. #TheClockmaker'sDaughter #NetGalley

I enjoy this author and really wanted to like this book. However i was tempted to put it down many times. I only didn't because i needed to find out in the end who was narrating this story. I think it was long and drawn out. I normally do not mind reading something that jumps between time, but this one jumped too much and too many times . I had a hard time following the characters and never truly did understand why the house called to some of the characters. I would not hesitate to recommend any of her other books...just not this one.

Just finished my latest novel. This one was interesting... I’m not usually one to take the bait of the book world buzz. But this newly published book (which they are discussing turning into a film) caught my attention being of a similar “type” of book I enjoy- Historical fiction. It was a comprehensive ghost story of lives intertwining through time, spanning the centuries between mid-1800s and modern day England. I found this book to be frustrating at times, because it felt as if I was building a jigsaw puzzle of a story and mystery characters, as I was reading it- unclear until the end. But it is also a story I’ll probably think about for a bit.

A very convoluted story with too many story lines. Hard to keep the timelines straight, characters for each time, etc.
