Beautifully written about the love between a brother and sister and how they survive an upsetting childhood and come out strong
Intriguing family dynamics. A family divided, with ties that keep bringing them back to explore love and forgiveness. And moving forward despite loss.
Very character driven look at a dysfunctional family and the importance of having a place to call home.
An interesting book about two people who cannot let go of the past and it ends up defining them. They were thrown out of their home by the wicked stepmother. A good read.
Those who listened to the book really like Tom Hanks as narrator and the voice of Danny. Many thought the story sometimes confusing because of the moving back and forth in the timeline. Book is about the relationship between the siblings and their connection to their home (The Dutch House). Characterizations and relationships were very thought provoking. Her writing is very descriptive. Liked the resolution at the end.
I loved hearing about the Dutch House itself, but the characters in it were the best. They were well developed, all with large admirable characteristics (except one!) and all with the reality of human fails that touched on what we fail at too. It was insightful to show how we can better avoid those failures as we live our lives. The book VERY MUCH kept my attention. I feel it has lots to discuss per the characters, their development and their life decisions and how that affected other people's lives. Good for book club discussion.
I listened to this one on audio and Tom Hanks was the narrator. He did a great job and it may have helped me feel like I knew the characters, but the writing of the characters is strong and they are well developed, so that I wanted to get to know them.
One of the best books I’ve listened to or read I a decade. Absolutely beautiful narrative. Tom Hanks reading was superb.
I listened to this as an audiobook. It is narrated by Tom Hanks. I enjoyed listening to his voice as he read this family drama.
Read it but found it lacking in characters that kept me interested or even really cared about their lives. Read it and forgot about it.
I was listening to a podcast with Kate DiCamillo who is a personal friend of Ann Patchett. Ann has said she didn’t have any idea how to end the book, so Kate wrote one and that is the paragraph Ann used!
Rated 8.16 out of 10. Readers loved the audio book version read by Tom Hanks.
The book got interesting about page 100, but then ebbed and flowed into interesting parts and then parts that drug on without adding to the story.
I really enjoyed this book. I did feel there were parts that were slow moving but overall I’m glad I read it. If it had happened to me I think I would have fought against the stepmom and not just let her take everything
Well written, family relationships, siblings, parents, career choices. Ann Patchett is a good storyteller and writer. The audio book read by Tom Hanks is a plus.
Tom Hanks's narration felt like a good friend was reading to me. I would fall asleep each evening with my audio book and have to recap the next day to hear what I had missed!. SG
A great read by a talented author. Interesting, well-developed characters in a captivating plot.
This is a book about families, and how they fall apart and come back together again. Ann Patchett is a masterful writer, and I must admit this book touched something deep in me about my own experiences with loss and family. I devoured the story and it changed the way I perceived my own role as a daughter. It is a true gift of a book.
This story, as told by Danny through the windows of the dutch house, is quite different in its approach. Easy reading with good flowing phrases.
