"So timely!" by Ann007 (see profile) 02/13/17

As we witness the 45th President of the United States consolidate power while trying to divide us, reading Trevor Noah's personal story should be a chilling wake up call to save our democracy/republic. While very personal, tragic and at many times entertaining, he lived through a very dark time and his story is so worth telling and listening to.

"Born A Crime" by Enelram (see profile) 02/13/17

Fabulous book. Well written. Trevor's ability to explain complex issues in a few insightful sentences, with humor and a "plain spoken" style, make this book a treasure. He then follows through with a fascinating story to illustrate the issue at hand. I was sorry to read the last sentence. I could easily read it again. Highly recommend this book.

"Oh Apartheid! Thou Wert Despicable!" by mimder (see profile) 02/16/17

Perfect coming together of South Africa's horrible history, a touching narrative of being Born a Crime, and an inspirational story of an amazing woman and mother. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Even more, some of it reads like stand-up comedy. With all the heaviness of TN's life story, you still will get good laughs.

"Born A Crime" by Sloanie (see profile) 04/24/17

A poignant look into life in South Africa during and just after Apartheid. Trevor Noah employs his trademark humor to share his personal experiences of growing up under this system of government, thus providing some funny vignettes to this very serious topic of race and discrimination.

Very good. I don't remember members of our Club previously so actively participating in the discussion.

"Through crucible of apartheid with sense of humor intact" by [email protected] (see profile) 08/12/17

Inside view of the insidious, misguided colonial system of apartheid from Noah's personal experiences growing up in South Africa. Anecdotes from childhood to adulthood written with insight and wry sense of humor. His fiercely independent and indomitable mother gave him the love and tools he needed to not only survive but to develop his gifts and thrive despite his surroundings. Very good read.

What a childhood this person had! Good balance of information on apartheid, tragedy and humor.

Trevor Noah’s upbringing and insight into the variety of South African groups is inspiring. He candidly brings his family, especially his mom to life while being introspective about his own not-so-perfect behavior. The editing could have been a little tighter to align timelines and remove repetition, however, I had hard time putting down.

"A great life story!" by [email protected] (see profile) 09/30/18

Living in the US, I never knew how hard life was in South Africa after Apartheid. This book not only illuminates the hardships for all people of color there, even those non-African, but shows how resilient people get through this life. I found it fascinating that this young man lived through the public and personal hardships to become the successful comedian he is today.

This book made me realize how little I know about apartheid. It was interesting to experience Trevor’s adventures through the eyes and perspective of an innocent little boy/young man. His sense of humour is wonderful!

Well written memoir. Trevor Noah recounts his life during apartheid. As a reader you are immersed in the experience of an outsider within an already marginalized group.

Trevor Noah’s Book Born a Crime isn’t just an autobiography of his earlier years but small stories that provide a peak into the life of a young boy who endured so much in the first 18 years of his life. Balanced against the lessons of his childhood are some of the harsh realities of apartheid. The book also centers around his mother and the strength she exhibited throughout the early years of his life as well as how her strength passed on to him. I wrote down so many quotes from this book and identified with various experiences throughout this book. I highly recommend this book.
