Disappointing

Very disappointing. I loved Judy Blume as a child and read everything she wrote. This is my first "adult" Judy Blume book, but it really seemed like it was more geared toward a YA audience, although with a few unnecessary sex scenes. Many of the characters were young adults. This was a very unfocused, meandering read. It was told in alternative voices, but there were way too many characters speaking. I am not normally bothered by switching voice, but this was overwhelming. If this wasn't a book written by an already established author, I doubt that it would have been published.

Amazing, but Atypical Book Club Selection

This autobiography is not for all book clubs. It is a wonderful selection for Laura Ingalls Wilder and Little House fans. The annotations in this book show meticulously research. The amount of work that went into the annotations is amazing. However, to really get the most out of the book, you need to not only read the original text written by Laura Ingalls Wilder about her life but also the annotations. There are so many annotations that it can be overwhelming. It is a long process to read this book. The actually text of the autobiography is not difficult to read, but most of the unknown and most interesting information comes from the annotations. Because of the format of the book, not all book clubs will be interested in reading this selection. It's a treasure for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans, though.

Excellent Choice for Your Book Club

My book club really enjoyed this book. It gives a rare look into life inside East Germany and contrasts it with life in the West. The personal account is moving while also giving great detail about the history of post WWII Germany and the Cold War years.

Beautiful, Brilliant, Insightful
Overrated

There are tons of extremely positive reviews for this book, but I (and most of my book club) was lukewarm about it. We all agreed that it was a very meandering read. It was not a quick read. I found it slow and boring for the most part.
