Introduction

The brutal murder of a business tycoon leaves Afton Tangler and the Twin Cities reeling, but that’s just the beginning of a gruesome crime spree...

Leland Odin made his fortune launching a home shopping network, but his millions can’t save his life. On the list for a transplant, the ailing businessman sees all hope lost when the helicopter carrying his donor heart is shot out of the sky.

Now with two pilots dead and dozens injured, Afton Tangler, family liaison officer for the Minneapolis Police Department, is drawn into the case. As she and her partner investigate family members and business associates, whoever wants Leland dead strikes again—and succeeds—in a brazen hospital room attack.

The supposedly squeaky clean millionaire has crossed the wrong person—and she’s not finished exacting her revenge. The case explodes into an international conspiracy of unbridled greed and violence. And as Afton gets closer to unearthing the mastermind behind it, she gets closer to becoming collateral damage...

Excerpt

“Now we gotta make these guys disappear,” Hack said, sounding reasonably upbeat.
“How?” Narong asked. “Where?”
Hack swiped a hand across his forehead. “If we was up in Duluth, I’d say we could dump ‘em in the Devil’s Cauldron.”
“What is Devil’s Cauldron?” Narong asked.
“Way up near the Canadian border, there’s this state park where the Brule River comes roaring down like thunder. The current hits this rock formation . . .” He gestured with his hand. “And splits the river. Half of the river tumbles down a waterfall and keeps going in a long stream, while the other half disappears into this long stone tunnel they call the Devil’s Cauldron.” ... view entire excerpt...

What was unique or unusual about the opening chapter? Did it prickle the hairs on the back of your neck?

Does the author create enough of a “sense of place” that you could picture the shooter’s nest? The city? How about the old casket factory?

Did you feel there were enough twists and turns in the story? What were your favorites?

Which character did you sympathize with most – and why?

Which of the antagonists did you find the most frightening – and why? Mom Chao Cherry, Narong, or Hack?

Do you think Prasong will be able to create a new life for himself?

Do you think Afton is able to balance working for the Minneapolis Police Department while still raising Tess and Poppy and making time for her personal life? Do you think most working women are able to achieve a good balance?

Notes From the Author to the Bookclub

“The action is nonstop.”

Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“The energy in this chilling Afton Tangler novel mounts to a fever pitch.”

RT Book Reviews

“Taut and eerie . . . sticks with you long after you’ve finished it.”

Grant Blackwood, NYT bestselling author of Tom Clancy Under Fire

“As tantalizing as any of the current police thrillers. I’m thinking Lisa Scottoline meets Lee Childs.”

Bourne Enterprise, Bourne, MA (Cape Cod)

“Schmitt gets everything right . . . it’s always fun to watch a talented author stretch her wings.”

St. Paul Pioneer Press

“Disturbing plot line.”

Publishers Weekly

“Schmitt fills her thriller with numerous twists and builds it to a heart-pounding conclusion that takes place during a monstrous blizzard. Fans of Midwest noir – think John Sandford – will revel in this nightmarish tale.”

Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Readers will be at the edge of their seats as the spooky criminals take center stage . . . a riveting story.”

Crimespree Magazine
