Wish Club: A Novel
by Kim Strickland

Article by Kim Strickland
Wish Club
Check out the reading guide

Dear Reader,
I firmly believe we're not given dreams without being given the ability to make them come true. In Wish Club, the women think witchcraft makes their wishes happen, but what really occurs is they start to believe-and then they take action. As an African Proverb so eloquently puts it, When you pray, move your feet. This is, essentially, the theme of my book.
The idea for Wish Club came in a quintessential "Aha!" moment. I'd become stuck in a draft of a different novel. Wondering why I kept getting stuck, I realized I wasn't writing what I was interested in: New Age thought, mysticism and of course, witchcraft. Well, I wasn't going to be able to work any more that day-I had my book club to go to. And that was it: the idea of joining witchcraft with a book group. I was so excited-I knew I'd been given an incredible gift. Now, I just had to take action.
As readers join the Wish Club, I'd like them to laugh and cry along with my characters, and perhaps come away a little more fearless when it comes to making their own wishes come true.

Best Wishes,
Kim

Skizzer by A.J. Keisling

Skizzer
Dear readers,
The story of Skizzer has been simmering in the back of my mind for the past twenty years, and I tried to start it two or three times but never felt "ready" until about five years ago. One contributing factor to these fits and starts was that I simply hadn't lived enough, experienced enough, to make the story come alive (for me--this isn't true of all authors). A second impediment was point of view. All my life I had heard that third person is the easiest POV for storytelling, and so I dutifully set out to write in the third person. It felt clunky for some reason, and the minute I switched to first person the words--and the storyline--flowed. I finally heard my main character, Claire, speaking to me.

The theme of sisterhood threaded through my growing up years in North Carolina and marked me in a powerful way, although when you're young you don't think about things like themes and symbols. Not surprisingly, sisterhood is the central theme in Skizzer, coupled with the idea that the people you think you know best don't always turn out to be who you thought they were.

As a child, the woods were my playground, and my siblings and I would romp in them unfettered by fear (it was a different time back then) until our mother rang the dinner bell, calling us home for supper. Not until I reached adulthood did I realize how deeply those woods impacted me. Like sisterhood, woods and full moons make a strong showing in the pages of Skizzer, anchoring readers to the places as I remember them. A final note: the Rectory Inn with its beguiling stone church is a real place I visited in England in 1997, years before the story took shape. It was a place so vibrant in my memory that it's no wonder it finally found a "home" in this book. I hope you enjoy reading Skizzer.

Sixtyfive Roses

Miriam the Medium
Dear Reader,

"Sixtyfive Roses" is first and foremost a love story between two sisters. Given the unpredictable nature of my sister's chronic-terminal illness, our relationship was always on shaky ground. Indeed, as the metaphor of the book implies, our entire life as a family living with disease was like a constant ride on a deep and fast-moving river. In writing the story, I wanted to show how we found joy and meaning in a world full of pain and uncertainty. Ultimately, the central focus of the book is how not to give up, how to find your true power and identity, even in the bleakest of circumstances.

What made you want to write this book?
Very simple: to keep a promise. My sister asked me as she lay dying, to "Tell our story, what we lived through together." She wanted to leave a legacy for others, and she wanted me to have a new purpose in my life. When she was diagnosed at the age of four, I had promised to die with her. Perhaps she feared I might actually find a way to do that. Instead, through the writing of the book, and the sharing of our story with others, both Pam and I have been given a new life.

What do you want readers to take away with them after reading the book?
I want those who are caring for a disabled loved one, or those grieving the loss of a loved one, to feel comforted and validated. I hope readers in general will feel inspired to overcome whatever obstacles they may be faced with in their life, and might also re-examine their family relationships with a deeper compassion. I very much want to pass on the pillars of Pam's legacy: that you can't control life by being afraid of it; that the only true power we have is our choice to change ourselves when we can't change our circumstances; that we have a responsibility to be open to and when possible, to create joy in our lives; and that although we must never give up, the time may come to surrender.

Miriam the Medium by Rochelle Shapiro
Article by Rochelle Shapiro
Dear Readers,

In Miriam the Medium, I'm inviting the reader into the mind of a psychic. You will see exactly how a psychic vision arises, whether it's visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile, or gustatory. And I want readers to know how it is for me to walk around and try to do my daily life with all the extrasensory input flying at me every moment.
"Oh, you're so lucky you're a psychic," everyone tells me, and I'd be the first to agree. But I want to let you in on what it's like being psychic and trying to negotiate relationships. For example, at an age when a teenage daughter is beginning to separate, what does a psychic mother do when she gets flashes of her daughter's private life? Does she confront her? What happens when you see what you never wanted to?
I also want to introduce you to my Russian grandmother, Sara Shapiro, from whom I inherited my gift. She not only told people's futures, also made potions and cures for their ailments. For conjunctivitis, she made drops from the urine of a pre-pubertal girl (usually mine) that were so effective that years later, when Murine came out, my mother swore it must really be urine with an "M" in front so people would buy it.
And most of all, by reading Miriam the Medium, I want you to get sparked by your own psychic experiences, learn to trust them, let them guide

A Passion Most Pure:

(Daughters of Boston, Book 1)
by Julie Lessman
Dear Friend,

At the tender age of twelve, Gone With the Wind swept me away...and my writing career took flight! I penned 150 pages of what would become (almost 40 years later!) my debut novel, A Passion Most Pure. Back then, my motivation was romance. And let me tell you, there is nothing more passionate or fulfilling than seeing this book realized!

I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Let me know what you think by dropping me a line at www.julielessman.com. From my heart-and hearts of my characters-I wish you the best!
