A Gentle Rain by Deborah Smith
|
|
|
Article by Deborah Smith
Tiny crabs and periwinkles seem like the most exotic creatures in the universe when you're five years old and standing, for the first time, barefoot and pale-skinned, on a Florida beach. When I was a child growing up in the dull suburban foothills of Atlanta, a week-long trip to the beaches of the vast, Atlantic surf along the cusp of northern Florida was an adventure beyond the wildest imaginings. Long before Walt Disney arrived in Orlando, Florida was the Magic Kingdom to me.
My husband, Hank, and I honeymooned on the Gulf coast, finding a rare, perfectly intact sand dollar on the beach the first day, which we have kept ever since. During my many visits, I became enamored of the 'other' Florida, home to four centuries of elegant, colorful and bawdy history.
Even now, among the golf courses and resorts of modern times, if you look deep into the woods at night, their shadows draped in moss, their paths footed with sand and seashells brought there by the winds and waters of the world, you may see the heart of Florida looking back at you in the eyes of a wild Cracker horse.
I wrote A Gentle Rain to share that heart, as I have known and loved it, with others.

The Beatitudes: Book 1 by Lyn LeJeune
|
|
Article by Lyn LeJeune

Out of New Orleans before the catastrophe that was made by a hurricane and, as Dante wrote, "of false gods who lied," comes The Beatitudes, part one in the New Orleans Trilogy. The Beatitudes portrays New Orleans as Dante's purgatory, a place were the sins of men are exposed for all to see, where redemption is close at hand but most often lost.Social workers Hannah "Scrimp" Dubois and
Earlene "Pinch" Washington have just started their own business, Social
Investigations, to solve the murders of ten foster children in New
Orleans, Louisiana. The New Orleans Police Department, the Catholic
Church, and local politicians have sidestepped clues that point to
those who hold great power, hampering their investigation. As
Scrimp and Pinch discover more evidence, they realize that they are
dealing with a force that crosses into the realm of the paranormal.
Then they are thrown into a world much like Dante's purgatory. Soon
they link the murderers to a secret organization called the White Army,
or La Armee Blanc, centered in New Orleans, but rooted in medieval
Europe and the Children's Crusades. Each clue leads to a beatitude, the
characteristics of those who are deemed blessed: the pure of heart, the
persecuted, the merciful, the sorrowful, the peacemakers, the meek, the
poor in spirit, and those who hunger and thirst after justice. By the
time the eleventh child-the sacrificial child-goes missing, Scrimp and
Pinch are determined to prevent his death. Racing against time
and the threat of an approaching hurricane, these two bold, no-nonsense
women work together to restore hope and bring closure to a city
battered by sin.

The Portofino Deception by Jeffrey S. Stephens
|
|
|
Article by Jeffrey S. Stephens

My new novel, THE PORTOFINO DECEPTION, is a thriller that pits former CIA agent Jordan Sandor against al-Qaeda terrorists, who are being aided by a rogue American agent, as they conspire to launch a worldwide series of deadly nerve gas attacks. In a race against time, from Woodstock to New York City to Fort Lauderdale to Paris and, ultimately, to the seaside town of Portofino, Italy, nothing is as it seems, and Sandor knows only he can prevent this catastrophe.
Best-selling author Robert K. Tanenbaum was kind enough to say, "Jeff Stephens is a writer to watch. His first book, The Portofino Deception, is a very solid, fast paced thriller that carries the reader on a globe-trotting adventure into the world of counter-terrorism. We will want more of CIA agent Jordan Sandor." For a look at Chapter One of THE PORTOFINO DECEPTION, and a chance to enter our contest to win a free copy of the book and become a character in the next Jordan Sandor novel, please visit my website at www.jeffreysstephens.com.
Best,
Jeffrey S. Stephens

The Contractor by Charles Holdefer
|
|
Article by Charles Holdefer
Dear Reader,
I've been asked if I was trying to be provocative when I wrote The Contractor. Actually, it's more the other way around: I feel I've been provoked.
It's the story of George Young, a solid family man and Gulf War veteran who accepts work as a private contractor who interrogates detainees. I wrote this book as a concerned American who thinks we've taken a seriously wrong turn in our policies toward torture.
A starred review in Booklist describes The Contractor as "a compelling mix of thriller, psychodrama, and yes, political commentary."
It has been selected as a "Book Sense Pick" for November by the American Booksellers Assocation.
This book isn't about politicians: it's about people on ground, trying to make sense.

To Catch a Cheat by Kelly St. John
|
|
|
TI'd love to tell you every reason that I wrote TO CATCH A CHEAT, such as my desire to examine how events-even those that seem insignificant-are all linked to one another, or my desire to explore the concept of "revenge" and whether or not it can ever be justified, or my wish to expose how our perception of a situation can be skewed. But the main reason is that Marissa Kincaid demanded her story be told. She's that way, you know. Or rather, she wants to be that way. She wants to be a take-charge kind of girl, one who'll do whatever it takes to make her cheaters (past and present) pay. Marissa wants to be the type of person who would force me to give her control of this letter and let her have her say. But the truth is, she asked me...nicely. Marissa simply isn't the type to demand her way, no matter how hard she tries. She's a true friend, a loving daughter and a faithful girlfriend. Or she was. She has no desire to be any kind of girlfriend to anyone anymore. And that is the truth, sort of. In any case, Marissa did ask to write this letter, and being the good author that I am, I'll let her.
From Marissa: Isn't it amazing how an event (or several events, in my case) in your past can affect every part of our future? At the time, the circumstance may not seem such a big deal, then later on you realize that it was the pivotal moment that changed everything. For example, say you'd been cheated on by EVERY GUY YOU EVER DATED. And okay, maybe "cheated" is too strong a word, since some of them didn't necessarily cheat with another person, but they still put things before you. WAY before you. And by things, you mean a career, or a mother (the term "mama's boy" comes to mind), or a tuba. Do not ask about the tuba. And say the only means that you see for rectifying this situation is by...retribution. At the time, creating a cheater database seems a terrific idea. But that decision may also come back to bite you in the-well, you get the picture. Because if you do create that database, and then you happen to put one guy on it who may not be guilty as charged, and then that guy happens to retaliate by creating a site about liars, and his site happens to feature YOU...
Like I said, isn't it amazing how an event in your past (or now, my present) can affect every part of your future? And doesn't it make you wonder...is that really such a bad thing?
