Abraham's Children by Jon Entine
Can identity be found in a pinprick of DNA? What can our genes tell us about our our ethnic and religious roots-what used to be called our "race"? ABRAHAM'S CHILDREN is a biblical epic told through the prism of our genes. It vividly bring to life a new understanding of Western identity and the shared biblical ancestry of Jews and Christians.

DNA is both time machine and microscope. Every one of us has at least some DNA from King David, Cleopatra, Constantine and other ancient historical figures. My book offers genetic witness to the story of the Exodus, the Lost Tribes, and the role of Jesus in transforming Western religion, altering forever the genealogical signatures left by the ancient Israelites? Are most of today's Jews the descendants of converts? Do our genes shed any light on the unending conflict between Middle East Jews and Arabs over the "right of return" to the Holy Land of their ancestors? How did medieval Christian practices contribute to the once-common belief that Jews are a race apart-and may also explain why Jews are known to have the highest IQ of any ethnic group in the world?

ABRAHAM'S CHILDREN brings to life the profound implications of the Age of Genetics for how we think about who we are.

The Last Known Victim by Erica Spindler
Article by Erica Spindler

san diego sunset

Amid death and destruction, hurricane-savaged New Orleans has a new dark force to fear.

As the rescue efforts unfold, a grisly discovery is made at one of the massive refrigerator 'graveyards.' One of these metal hulks contains six human hands-all female, all right hands. The press has dubbed the unknown perpetrator 'The Handyman.' But with no way to trace the origin of this refrigerator, and with evidence lost to time and the elements, the case dead-ends.

Captain Patti O'shay is a straight-arrow, by-the-book cop who is assigned to the case. Her tough, unflinching character is fractured when her husband and fellow police captain is found murdered-surprised by looters taking advantage of the post-storm chaos.

August 2007Patti, still grieving and disillusioned, gets a call from homicide: skeletal remains have been unearthed in City Park. The unknown victim- a female-is missing her right hand. But for Patti, this grave holds something even more shocking. Found beside the victim's bones is her husband's police badge.

Casting aside the very 'rule book' by which she has lived her life, Patti is fearless-but so is the killer. As he stalks her she is forced to question all she believes in, to doubt the code she has lived by-because she knows that if she doesn't find The Handyman first, she will become his last known victim.

Lasting Contribution demonstrates how to create meaning in your life, take sophisticated action, manage your career, and make a lasting contribution to the world. It synthesizes the thought of Aristotle, Sun Tzu, Gdel, Frankl, Confucius, and many others. It draws insights from information theory, sociology, Zen, psychology, the history of art, management theory, the philosophy of science, and a dozen other fields. Doesn't She Look Natural?
by Angela Hunt
Article by Angela Hunt Doesn't She Look Natural
On my forty-fifth birthday, I realized I was halfway to ninety . . . and The End. So I told my agent that I wanted to write a series about a funeral home. It wouldn't be gloomy or macabre, but about life and death and everything that happens in between.

Believe it or not, she was thrilled.

In Doesn't She Look Natural?, Jennifer Graham, the no-nonsense chief of staff for a Virginia Senator, finds herself an unemployed single mom. Forced to live with her mother until she can find work that does not involve her gregarious ex-husband, her efforts are stymied until she learns that she has inherited a funeral home in picturesque Mt. Dora. Jennifer journeys to the Florida town with her two sons, never dreaming that within a mortuary she will uncover mysteries of love and life.

The sequel, She Always Wore Red, is finished, and I'm now writing the third book, She's in a Better Place. By juxtaposing a mother who's dealing with more life than she can handle with people are facing death, I think I've been able to explore a few areas that truly matter. I hope you'll join us on the journey!

Empire Rising by Sam Barone

Article by Sam Barone
More than five thousand years ago, in the land of the Fertile Crescent, a community of desperate people built something never attempted before: the first walled village. In Dawn of Empire, we learn the circumstances that drove them to undertake such a massive effort, and its resulting impact on their lives and society. That story was told against the love between the warrior Eskkar and the slave girl, Trella. But the story didn't end there, and Empire Rising describes the growing pains that afflicted not only Eskkar and Trella, but mankind's first walled city.

Akkad has just driven off a barbarian assault. But winning the battle has just started a host of new problems for Eskkar and Trella. The countryside is ravaged, crops destroyed, and thousands of people are killed or enslaved. Akkad is exhausted, short of food, with most of its soldiers dead. Bandits roam the land, adding to the destruction caused by the barbarian migration.

Eskkar and Trella have their hands full trying to get Akkad back to the prosperity it enjoyed, but it isn't easy. Shortages lead to discontent and those rulers displaced by Eskkar begin to complain once again. In spite of all these problems, Eskkar is forced to leave Akkad, to restore peace to the countryside. Trella, now very pregnant, stays behind, ruling in his place.

But unknown to either of them another player has entered the city. Korthac, driven out of his native land of Egypt, has arrived in Akkad and prepares to take control. Ruthless, cruel, and an experienced warrior, he devises a plan and begins building his own forces.

Unaware of what's going on, Eskkar keeps busy pacifying the northern borders of Akkad. Defeating one of the local warlords, he meets Lani. The captured concubine of the defeated warlord, she appeals to Eskkar for help. Lani is very different from Trella, and Eskkar soon finds himself with another woman on his hands. Torn between two women, he learns that Akkad and Trella have fallen into Korthac's hands.

Now it's Eskkar who's outside the wall, fighting to get inside and rescue his wife and Sargon, his newborn son. Will he succeed in recapturing both his city and his family? Read Empire
