| The Reincarnationist by MJ Rose |
|
|
Article by MJ Rose
When I was three years old, I told my great grandfather things about his childhood in Russia that there was simply no way I could have known.
He became convinced I was a reincarnation of someone in his past. And over time, after more incidents, my mother - a very sane and logical woman -- also came to believe it.
Reincarnation was an idea I grew up with that my mom and I talked about and researched together.
For years, I wanted to write a novel about someone like my mother - who was sane and logical - who started out skeptical but came to believe in reincarnation. To really explore the subject from a literal and metaphorical point of view. But I was afraid if I did people would think I was a "woo woo weirdo".
I tried to start the book ten years ago after my mother died but I was too close to the subject and missed her too much to be able to explore it objectively. Every once in while the idea would start to pester me again but till I stayed away from it.
Then a few years ago on the exact anniversary of my mom's death my niece, who was a toddler at the time, said some very cruious things to me about my mother and I - things she really couldn't have known -- and the pestering became an obsession.
Josh Ryder, the main character has my mom's initials, her spirit and her curiosity and like her, he's a photographer. But there the similarities end.
When Josh star starts having flashbacks that simply can't be explained any other way except as possible reincarnation memories he goes to New York to study with Dr. Malachai Samuels -- a scientist and Reincarnationist who works with children helping them deal with past life memories.
In the process Josh gets caught up in the search for ancient memory tools that may or may not physically enable people to reach back and discover who they were and who they are.
Rather than me tell you anymore about it, let me pass on what a wonderful author, New York Times Bestseller Douglas Preston, says about it:
"The Reincarnationist by M.J. Rose has got to be one of the most original and exciting novels I've read in a long time, with a premise so delicious I'm sick with envy I didn't think of it myself. The novel's exhilarating story sweeps the reader across the centuries, from ancient Rome to the present day, with stops in between. It will open your mind to some of the incredible mysteries of the past and the greatest secrets of existence. The Reincarnationist is more than a page-turner-it's a page-burner. Don't miss it."
The book has garnered stars from both Publisher's Weekly, Library Journal and is a BookeSense pick for September. I think of all my books, this is the one my mom would be the most proud of which is fitting since it's really the one she inspired.

| The Dowry Bride by Shobhan Bantwal |
|
Article by Shobhan Bantwal
The Dowry Bride is the story of one young woman trapped in India's arranged marriage and dowry system, and her dramatic escape to freedom and hope.
The idea for the book is a result of reading shocking news about dowry deaths. In modern India, where women are acquiring advanced degrees and pursuing exciting and lucrative careers, there is no reason why an archaic system like dowry should exist. Why should a young woman be sold to the lowest bidder? The atrocity goes further if the dowry is inadequate or unpaid: Her groom's family often abuses her and may even kill her, so the widower can find another bride who will bring a satisfactory dowry.
Megha, my heroine, has the courage to run away from potential death by incineration. She not only survives but ultimately triumphs.
I want my readers to be entertained by a story set in a different country, but with the universal themes of betrayal and hope, forbidden passion and the power of love. I also want them to learn and experience some fascinating facets of a culture they may not have had an opportunity to become familiar with.

| Red Sea by Emily Benedek |
|
|
Article by Emily Benedek
Soon after 9/11, I wrote an article for Newsweek magazine about Israeli counter-terror experts. After the story ran, one of the people I'd interviewed called me and asked if I'd like to meet? After several visits, he asked me if I'd consider writing a book about airline security. He'd become convinced Washington wasn't going to do the right thing. I immediately realized I wouldn't be able to write the book as non-fiction because I'd compromise all my sources, many of whom were still active at very high levels. So I wrote the book as fiction.
I wrote this book because I was terrified. I was in Manhattan on 9/11. I was bringing my three year-old to her first day at nursery school. Every day I looked out the window, expecting to see a mushroom cloud.
Writing Red Sea helped calm my fears. I put my characters in just the situations I feared the most, and let them use their brains and what they learned from each other to get out of them. It helped me a great deal.

The Priest of Blood by Douglas Clegg |
|
When I was a boy of ten, I stood on the upper steps of the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan in Mexico and saw the vast valley of the recent excavations of a hidden past. In my mid-teens, I traveled to Spain, and at the Alhambra, I felt a similar sense of a lost culture that was rich, and yet somehow buried. And then, in my twenties, I spent some nights in what seemed a mythic forest in France, full of the legends of the old gods and goddesses, tales of Druids and of faerie, of sacred trees and kingdoms beneath lakes. It is from all this, and a sense of wanting to unearth the secret history of the past, that brought me to explore the world of The Vampyricon, and The Priest of Blood.
To me, the vampire is an archetype of what has been buried, lost, forgotten -- and still threatens us, but also is a kind of guardian of ancient cities the same way serpents lurk in the depths of buried temples and broken altars. This is how I see Aleric, the hero of The Vampyricon -- he is a messiah of vampires, thrown to this destiny both by his own actions and by the storms of existence.
There is a secret history of the world. We do not know all. The conquerors wrote the history; the vanquished were buried or absorbed. There is so much of the world's past we do not know simply because it has been hidden. From this sense, I began moving toward writing this dark fantasy epic of vampires, sword, and sorcery. The Vampyricon encompasses three books: The Priest of Blood, The Lady of Serpents, and The Queen of Wolves. I hope you enjoy them.

| God's Shrink: 10 Sessions andf Life's Greatest Lessons from an Unexpected Patienmt by Michael Adamse, PhD |
|
Article by Michael Adamse
God's Shrink is the story of a therapist who believes he has 'seen it all' until a patient shows up claiming to be God. The story unfolds session by session, building in momentum until it reaches an inspiring and thought provoking ending. The book was conceived as a result of my work as a therapist for over 25 years. Through my experience with problems of all kinds, I came to understand more deeply the common denominators which bind us all together as human beings. I also have a deep interest in the relationship between psychology and spirituality. I wondered if God might be more like us than we imagined and thought that if that were so, then it would be entertaining to explore that idea in the context of a fiction-inspirational novel. I wanted the book to be an easy read with a simple yet profound message that was unique in its delivery. My main goal in writing God's Shrink is to have the reader consider the idea that God needs our help and that our work while we are here is a partnership.
