| Stealing the Dragon by Tim Maleeny |
|
|
Article by Tim Maleeny
As a voracious reader, I wanted to write a book that I would enjoy reading, a story that combined the best elements of crime fiction into one thrilling story. For me that meant writing a classic private eye mystery, but it had to have the pacing of a thriller. Maybe some martial arts, ancient legends and political intrigue thrown in for good measure. And why not add some humor along the way?
One reviewer said the story took the classic PI novel and "turned it on its head." That's probably why readers and booksellers have responded the way they have. The Poisoned Pen Bookstore describes STEALING THE DRAGON as "an irresistible blend of Jackie Chan and Dashiell Hammett laced with Lee Child." And David J. Montgomery, newspaper critic and reviewer for Mystery Ink calls it "an entertaining story that combines a gumshoe mystery in the tradition of Dashiell Hammett with the exotic action of Trevanian."

| Here She Lies by Kate Pepper |

At the time I began planning my latest novel, HERE SHE LIES, about a wife and mother who faces identity theft, I was thinking a lot about the ongoing struggles of women who juggle different and sometimes conflicting roles-basically every woman in modern America, including myself. This led me to contemplate the idea of identity and how hard it can be to know exactly who you are by the time you flop into bed at the end of a long, shape-shifting day. How, I wondered, could I transfer the concept of identity, the sense of self that is crucial to all of us, into a novel and still make the story concrete enough to give the reader a solid handle?
The first answer came quickly: I would write about identity theft. It goes straight to the heart of the question 'What is identity?' if someone can just pluck yours out of the thin air of cyberspace and systematically destroy your life. It's a threat we're all wide open to and most of us fear. Research showed me that, once your identity is snatched, it isn't so easy getting it back. Identity theft would provide a compelling context for a story.

The next important component of the novel hit me unexpectedly, while on vacation with my family, sitting on a porch overlooking a beautiful lake: My protagonist, Annie, would have an identical twin-Julie. As Annie confronted the fact that her identity had been stolen, Julie would be there to add some misdirection to Annie's sense of her self as it seems to slip away. Annie trusts Julie more than anyone else in the universe but at the same time she begins to wonder if her trust is a mirage.
Then, while I was working out the story for HERE SHE LIES, a terrible thing happened: a friend of mine was murdered while walking on a country road in the early afternoon. Her murder sent shock waves through the small town where she'd been visiting a friend-and it also sent shock waves through me. She was an old work friend whom I hadn't seen for a while, but even so, it was devastating news. I couldn't stop thinking about her. There was no way she wasn't going to creep into my novel; she was too much on my mind to avoid it.
The story opens with Annie leaving her husband, Bobby, whom she believes has been unfaithful, and fleeing to the Massachusetts town where Julie recently moved. She arrives into a crime scene in front of her sister's home. A woman who looks much like the twins has been murdered. The mysterious death casts a shadow over the story as Annie, Bobby and Julie gradually unravel-and are unraveled by-the truth behind the infidelity, murder, and discovery of identity theft that give shape to the story and the mystery at its heart: One of the twins is guilty of murder, but which one? My mother's family were native Jewish Palestinians, dating far back to the beginning of the nineteenth century when my great-grandmother and great-father settled in ancient Jerusalem, beginning our family. The war there is part of me through the thickness of my blood and its ties, created and stirred by rooted family.
My personal connectedness to the stories I heard from uncles , aunts, cousins, my mother and my grandmother opened my ears up very early in my life to the ways in which the intimate storytelling of family could capture authentic, deeply felt tales of war and struggle. Even when the stories were filled with sometimes dubious claims to heroism, pumped up a bit to impress or entertain, that palpable human presence of voice and memory gave me a trust in their essential truthfulness, if not every exact detail and fact.
I hope readers come away having met real characters trying to live their daily lives in the chaos and maelstrom of war. And feel my story can be their story, too. No matter how different we are, and where we are from. I wanted to tell a coming-of-age tale, about mothers and daughters, a young woman's burgeoning sexuality and touch the chords of human universality, not of politics.

| The Other Woman: Twenty-one Wives, Lovers, and Others Talk Openly About Sex, Deception, Love, and Betrayal edited by Victoria Zackheim |
|
|
One of the first questions I'm asked is Were you the wife or the other woman? Strange as seems, I was neither. The idea came to me while listening to my car radio. Someone said 'the other woman' and my imagination took flight. Anthology! I pitched the idea to an agent and she loved it. Then I contacted a few authors. Would anyone be willing to share something so personal? One woman wrote, "How can I not? The bastard's got it coming!" Within days, twenty-one authors were on board. In January 2006, The Other Woman sold to Warner Books (now Grand Central Publishing). Several months later, twenty-one superb essays were written and delivered.

When you hold The Other Woman in your hands, please think of the heart and soul that went into each page. I sincerely hope that you love this book-I believe that you will-and that you read each essay as it was intended: an intimate look into the heart and mind of the author. Some essays will make you laugh, others will make you weep, and each one will make you feel as if you've known these remarkable women for a lifetime.

| Blood Red by Heather Graham |

Article by Heather Graham
I grew up on Hammer films and Edgar Allen Poe and simply love a good story that has touches of the paranormal. Hey, also grew up on Fright Night and every imaginable version of the vampire story. What I love about writing a vampire book--I can make up my own rules, because you can argue with me about vampires, but not about MY vampires, not if I remember to follow my own rules. I'm still trying to figure out myself how we took the grisly creature from Nosferatu and made him into a young Chris Sarandon. One of my favorite movies ever? The Lost Boys. The concept is fun and scary and it's the classic fight of good against evil. Pure fun to write, and I hope, pure fun to read!
