| Author Giveaway 1: Scot on the Rocks |

Article by Brenda Janowitz
What does a smart, savvy Manhattan attorney do when she's invited to her ex-boyfriend's wedding? Well, she goes, of course, and then writes a fictional novel about it. Okay, okay, so maybe not, but that's what I did! Going to my ex-boyfriend's wedding (and the requisite drama that then ensued!) gave me the impetus to write my debut novel, SCOT ON THE ROCKS (How I Survived My Ex-Boyfriend's Wedding With My Dignity Ever-So-Slightly Intact). SCOT ON THE ROCKS is the story of Brooke Miller, a Manhattan attorney who finds herself in a bit of trouble when she accepts an invitation to an ex-boyfriend's wedding, only to find herself, just days before the wedding, without a proper date. Hilarity ensues.
All stories will be considered for publication on my website. Check out http://www.brendajanowitz.com/community.html to hear from some very brave souls who have already shared their own crazy wedding stories! xoxo, Brenda

| Author Giveaway 2: Bob Dylan: Intimate Insights from Friends and Fellow Musicians |
|
|
Article by Author Kathleen Mackay
I had great fun interviewing Dylan's pantheon of musician friends. The interviews in the book include Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Rosanne Cash, Bono, Bruce Springsteen and the Beatles, among others. They offer insight into Dylan's artistry and elusive personality. The book provides a keen portrait of the friendships and relationships that helped shape important musicians whose voices have influenced our society as a whole. While exploring a chronological timeline of Dylan's growth as both a songwriter and performer, the book also traces significant moments in our cultural history. The idea that sparked this book was Dylan's book Chronicles. It was not written in chronological fashion, was vague, and the grammar was atrocious. By writing it, Dylan was trying to ensure his own legacy, and I felt that his musician friends could probably describe him and their shared experiences better than Dylan could himself. I would love to talk to your book club, if you are within driving distance from Concord, Massachusetts, for example, in New England or New York. You can reach me at bdylanbook@aol.com. And may you stay forever young!
I am giving away copies of my book to five BookMovement book clubs and am available to call in to your book club. I will also meet clubs located in New England & New York. Email me |
| Author Giveaway 3: Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day |
|
|
Article by Author Toni McGee Causey
Whenever I'm asked why I wrote this book, my first answer is that if I didn't, Bobbie Faye was going to blow something up... probably involving me. She arrived here, bags packed, intending on staying, and it was either write about her or get therapy, and writing was way cheaper. The central idea was simple: one woman, battling against the odds, trying to save her brother. Someone with trust issues, forced to trust a stranger with her life. I wanted to write a story where someone was scrappy and smart, but also someone for whom things never come easily, and I wanted to watch her grow through that experience. Mostly, I wanted to show how her humor gets her through the day, as well as her difficult life. She's broke, she's got so many responsibilities, she's plagued by bad luck, but her own humor--and her ability to see the absurd in the chaos around her--keeps her sane, makes people love her, and ultimately, saves her. That humor, that way of facing down the worst disasters, is what I hope readers take away. If I've cheered one person up, made one person laugh, or made one person look at their own life with a little more lightness, feeling better able to take on their own adversity, then I will be thrilled.
More about Toni...

Article by Author Dan A. Baker
Enter to Win this Book
I was first introduced to the fascinating possibilities of gene-based aging reversal in 2000 on the Discovery Channel. The BBC documentary LIVING FOREVER aired for the first time, and presented an anthology of the scientific work in the area of human aging. The film introduced several startling discoveries in cellular aging reversal, regenerative medicine, proteomics, etc. I was attracted to the constellation of personal and moral dilemmas human immortality would present to people. Would you want to live forever? Would you want to be young again? Would it be fair to the next generations? What would happen to social structures and human culture? Who would be treated and how would you control this technology? What would it look and feel like? Would you become reckless and impetuous again? Would you become even more cautious and conservative? Could the human mind stand centuries of reality?
During the research phase I discovered even more incredible implications of human genomic engineering. Francis Fukuyama predicted in his landmark book OUR POST HUMAN FUTURE that when unlimited genomic engineering and designer children arrived, a "gene wars" scenario would be quite possible. If you were going to design children, what would you select for? What traits and characteristics would you want? This lead me to the fields of behavioral genetics and evolutionary psychology. "How far did you go?" Jasmine asked. "We designed a mind." Will replies.
Wild, wild stuff for a novelist.
I want the readers to take away a series of completely new and unprecedented questions about the near future of the human race. What if? What if comprehensive genomic engineering arrives? What would I do? Would I want to live forever?
