My Reviews
In 1875 the Cheyenne tribe proposed to President Grant a plan to assimilate the Native Americans with the white men: the U.S government could trade 1000 white women for 1000 horses. In real life, it never happened but author Fergus supposes that it did. May Dodd and other women are recruited from insane asylums, prisons, brothels and other circumstances and sent as brides for the Cheyenne tribe. They are required to produce at least one child and stay with the tribe for 2 years. After that they are free to carry on their lives any where they wish.
This is a story about prejudice, clashing cultures, loyalty, freedom, love, and the strong nature of women determined to endure and survive. Lots of topics for discussion!
We all loved it! Although we weren't able to have a heated discussion about this book, we were able to share our favorite parts and characters, and discuss what we really liked about the book. We all enjoyed the letter format, and have vowed to write more letters ourselves! We each had different favorite characters and situations that stood out for one of us weren't the same for the rest of us. So even though we've had more lively discussions, this one was still completely enjoyable!
