My Reviews
Picoult deals with important topics in American Society: school bullying, gun violence and adolescent identity. She raises a number of important questions about growing up in modern America with its emphasis on popularity and fitting in at all costs. I felt some of the detail and descriptions were longer than necessary and slowed plot development. I felt her descriptions of the adolescents and female adults were insightful;however, her depictions of the important father figures were limited (Peter's father)and in the important case of Mat's father, nonexistent.
Ishiguro has a clever idea for a short story; however, he has several hundred pages of descriptive narrative that hardly advances the story line or character development. The major story line and character development of parts one and two could have been edited down to several chapters. Part three is the most interesting part of the novel. His discussion of the positive and negative effects of cloning was the most engaging part of the novel. In short, an interesting short story, but a boring novel.
A more interesting approach to a similar subject would be Brave New World.
Sorry I missed the group discussion, I had to attend the last day of poll worker training for the upcoming election.
