My Reviews
The writing is truly spectacular and is certainly worth reading from a literary perspective however elements of the book were troubling to me as a female. The book is full of male dominated fantasies generally with very little connection to the female involved. While the intention is to portray a man consumed with passion and never wavering love, he translates into current times as a stalker. The fact that he bids his time in the beds of everyone sort of female from a young school girl to older widows does not endear the character to me at all. As long as I suspended my own feminist ideas it was entertaining but it was a struggle to keep my indignation in check. However, all being said, it is well worth reading.
First of all, I wish the rating system was set up a little differently because it is a rare book that I would recommend without any reservations and on a unqualified scale of 1-5 I would rate this more like a 3.5. It was certainly a good read and the only book that our club members have all enjoyed reading. Personally, I would have preferred that story was told of from the perspective of on of the more interesting characters, Gretchen perhaps, since May is is written as such a classical, romance novel stereotype and I had a hard time finding a woman's voice in the writing. The concept of the story and story line certainly deserve a 5 rating.
Finally, a book that is truly readable, being both entertaining and well written.
